Indigenous Worldview - Marenda Desjarlais (Langley Christian Indigenous Education Coordinator)

Walking Together: Indigenous Worldview and the Christian School Context

  1. What is worldview? Core elements of Indigenous Worldview
  2. Tensions and harmony w/ Christian faith
  3. Practical ways to integrate relational and land-based perspectives

What shapes our Worldview

  • Faith, family, community, culture, land
  • What has shaped your worldview the most? Has it remained the same since childhood or has it changed as you've grown?

  • Defining Indigenous Worldview
    • All life is sacred and interconnected
    • Knowledge comes from experience, story, and the land
      • If you saw the land as a teacher, what might it change about your approach to education?
    • Balance, respect, and reciprocity sustain relationships
  • Christian Worldview Overview
    • God as Creator
    • Humany is image-bearers
    • Stewardship and love of creation
    • Relationship and redemption through Christ

  • Where it's complex
    • Spiritual interpretations of creation
    • The role of Creator and creation
    • Reconciling Indigenous spirituality with Christ-centred theology
  • Two-Eyed Seeing
    • Seeing the world through one eye with the strengths of Indigenous knowledge, and the other eye with the strengths of Western or scientific knowledge. Using both eyes together for the benefit of all.
  • What would two-eyed seeing look like in your subject area and how would it help students to understand truth in a deeper way?

Practical Applications

    • Storytelling and local voices
      • Talking in circles
      • Teaches respect, patience, etc
    • Land-based learning and creation care
    • Relationship-centred teaching
    • Learning through reflection, gratitude, and service
  • What is a small or practical step you can take that would include relationship, reflection, or land-based learning in something you already teach?
    • Peer reflection to encourage viewing through a different lens

Reflections

  • How might learning from Indigenous worldview deepen your understanding of God and creation?
