Apr. 29 In-House SEL Pro-D: Morning Session 2 - The Role of Voice and Choice in Student Engagement (Kristie Spyksma)
Belonging and Universal Supports:
- Available all the time for everybody
- Reduce the need to fit in
- Reduce student and teacher stress
- Calmer classrooms
Voice and Choice
- Voice: sharing in learning design
- Choice: choosing the option that works best
- What are examples of choice that...
- Leads to engagement and learning?
- Does not lead to student engagement and learning?
Motivation
Internalized Motivation:
- Autonomy: I can independently make a meaningful decision to reach a goal.
- How?
- Independent work time
- Encourage effort
- Opportunity to talk to each other while you listen
- Hints instead of how-to's
- Impact
- Increased effort, persistence, creative thinking
- Mastery: I believe that my gorth is more important than the reward/grade.
- How?
- Learning targets with self-reflection
- "Goldilocks" tasks (not too hard and not too easy) - zone of proximal development
- Multiple entry points
- Feedback that increases learning
- Impact
- Purpose: I am working towards something that is bigger than myself and my personal gain.
- How?
- Tasks that help students contribute positive to the group
- Structure interactions that help students show kindness to others
- Impact
- Belonging
- Self-confidence
Choice: A Skill that Needs to be Taught
- Start with low stakes choices
- Limit choices
- Scaffolding
- Modeling and reflection
- Clear purpose/goal (Not just choice for choice's sake)
- Choice examples:
- Product
- Resources
- Methods
- Topics
- Structure
- Use of time
- Learning space
- Learning activity
- Grouping - there needs to be teaching that gets students to a place where they can choose groups well (what is the stress cost?) -- very difficult skill to learn!
