InspirEd - AI is not a Surprise to God (Darren Spyksma)

AI is not a Surprise to God
  • Fist to 5 - take out the 3 for deeper reflection
  • We are created to create. That is a part of the human experience. There are a lot of AI tools that are able to help us abundantly create.
    • Every tool we use predisposes us (or doesn't) to certain things.
  • Let's talk about A.I. through the lens of God's story. It is not a surprise to Him who is in all things.
    • Creation, The Fall, Redemption, New Creation (Garden to City -- there is some technology involved in that city, even if we don't know what that looks like. It's not our job to figure it out, but God invites us into that redemptive part.)
    • Sin doesn't create anything, it just redirects what is already created. Even through the fall, God is good and in creation.
  • "We're going to use A.I. in order to..." (bring about shalom, etc)
    • A.I. is not an end in itself, but is a tool that can be used to reach a different goal.
    • "I wish A.I. did..."
  • "We shape our tools, after that, they shape us." - John Culkin
  • If we don't have time to reflect and self-assess, that's a priority problem.
  • A.I. is being used -- if you can't be transparent with it, you shouldn't be using it.
    • Is this serving God, others, and creation? If not, need to reflect on whether we should be using it.

  • Need to be aware that things like ChatGPT use truth by consensus
  • Need to develop the perseverance and skill to teach students to use these tools well. We can help the next generation use A.I. in the service of God.
  • Red, yellow, green areas for using A.I. with students.
    • Caveat: "If you're using A.I., you need to show me where."
  • Are we aiming for compliance or a deepening of human understanding/experience?

New Reporting Order has been followed up with videos Chris Hunter bit.ly/BCAMT2023 What does "extending" look like in your math classroom? Working in how to calculate using spreadsheets ("if", etc.) Extension is not synonymous with perfection! How do students set up, attempt, demonstrate, etc? Play with AI or ChatGPT to get extending and synthesizing questions.  WrongMath on Twitter -- collection of photos with bad math @xphils     pstringer@croftonhouse.ca

BCAMT 2023 - Helping Students Enjoy Pre-Calculus 11, 12 and Calculus Courses - Ron Coleborn

What does it look like when students are enjoying a course?  The thinking process, as long as we feel confident and have support Getting the thinking and not feeling like we have to know it right away because of a test tomorrow, etc. Assignments, Desmos (activities and regular graphing calculator) Not easy because there is a lot to cover! Presentation Folder Most of the assignments in the folder should take ~4 days, so give a week or so. 1-1.5 class periods, the rest is outside of class.  Contact Ron: ron.coleborn29@gmail.com Seeking to find material that fits into both content and competency - what hits the learning standards as a whole?  Desmos:  Inserting picture and create graphs/points around that Mystery Functions - creating using piecewise functions Desmos Selfie - picture behind and create a graph pic (PreCalc 12 for transformations, could do PreCalc 11 with more simplistic functions) Example 2 Leap Frogs - Quadratics Either with counters and squares or the ...
